About S&P 500 (US500) Trading

The S&P 500 (US500) stock market index was introduced in 1957 by the American financial services company Standard & Poor’s Financial Services LLC. It is a leading indicator of US equities, and as one of the most frequently used benchmarks for the US stock market on the whole it covers about 75% of the American equity market by capitalization.

Based on the market capitalization of 500 large companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange or the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, the S&P 500 (US500) comprises 502 common stocks of these 500 companies and it is calculated and disseminated in real time, with its components and weightings determined by S&P Dow Jones Indices. The 500 companies included by the S&P 500 (US500) index are selected by the S&P Index Committee. The industries covered by the stock index are very versatile, including health care, consumer finance, information technology, investment banking and brokerage, industrials, chemical industry, and biotechnology, to only name a few.
